Over the last 2 centuries, the female outfit has been enriched by a lot of new items. It is now very common for women to wear pants or blazers for example. Fashion would not be what it is today without the apparition of those types of garment in the women’s wardrobe. On the other hand, for men, the last 2 centuries have witnessed the slow disappearance of some very interesting items. I found very sad for example the almost total annihilation of the cape. I think I sometimes saw a cape on a catwalk but as far as I remember, I never passed the way of a man wearing such piece of clothe.

I decided last winter to try something. I made myself a long, big cape, that I would wear in many different occasion, cocktail party, art opening, streets, cafes,… The reaction of peoples was quite interesting. Most peoples loved it but could not help trying to find something to refer it to. They would usually refer to Dracula (I shall maybee sun tan a bit more) or to XIXth century European nobility. I was a bit surprised that nobody referred to super-heroes, which are the most typical XXth century cape wearer. It was probably due to the black color and very tailored cut of the cape.

The XIXth century relation was matching very well with what was in my mind when I designed this cape. It is a part of my Automne-Hiver 09/10 collection, which is very much about romanticism. This term shall be understood here in it’s XIXth century meaning, which is miles apart from the modern-soap common understanding of romanticism. It is more a Georges Sand romanticism than a Pretty Woman’s one, that I had in mind. Creating this cape, I would think of Lamartine going back to the Bourget Lake to put together his memories of Elvire, I would think of the Wanderer Above The Sea of Mist by Friedrich.

Though I was in this very mood when conceiving this garment, I would not design it as just a quote of some ancient thinkers. As all of my works, it would have to be definitely anchored in the world we live in, it would have to be able to find it’s place in our today’s world. I firmly believe that this cape could easily take part in a modern man’s wardrobe. It has a little bit of drama but is sober enough to make this drama dealable with, it emphasize the stature of the silhouette, giving it a powerfull dimension. One that would wear this cape would be challenged to be comfortable enough with it’s own position to cope with the posture given by the cape, and to dare to bear the oddity implied by the usage of an item coming from some other age.

Adapting some timeless concepts to the life in today’s world, and trying to encourage peoples be more confident in their relation with society is a permanent focus on Le Divan’s design, and this cape is a good example of how apply this aim.

94.8 × 74.8 cm - Kunsthalle Hamburg

For our automne-hiver 2009 collection, we found inspiration on the painting “Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer” (Wanderer above the sea of Mist) by Caspar David Friedrich. The picture shows a man from behind, standing on a rocky promontory, observing a tortured landscape, drowned in an intense and tumultuous mist.

More than just a person looking at a landscape, we see in that man a person of full self-confidence, which observes the beauty of nature, and it’s violence without being intimidated nor pretending to dominate it. He contemplates, admires and is probably experiencing a deep introspection. With poise, and humility, he faces a world full of grandiose, but which also is disturbing, even violent.

This attitude, this balance between humility and confidence, is the spirit that has driven us in conceiving the automne -hiver 2009 collection, which is thought as a reflect of that state of mind. The selection of fabric is of total sobriety, the color palette is almost monochromatic, in the aim to offers no distraction to the eyes of the observer. The sight lay on subtle details, such as twisted cutlines, which embrace the silhouette, as the mist would embrace the rock or as the frenzy of imagination wraps in the maze of thought. Sharps triangular pleats, refers to the angular rocks and encourage to the consciousness of one’s own fragility. Straps, which wraps around an ankle, or cross over a chest, are not here seen as elements of constraint but as reinforcements, which closes the garments, insulating the body, providing an undisturbed peace of mind to contemplate the world and practice introspection.

Errant, contemplant la mer de brume

Collection automne-hiver 2009

"Couture, Independent Designer, High Quality, Unique, Avant-Garde,..." are definitly not the first notions we think about when we come to face the mention "Made in China" on the label of a garment. And, YES, China is and will be for a long time, the world center of standardized mass production but NO, it is not the only way fashion goes on here.

We are a fashion house, we are a French and an Australian couturier, and we believe we can import in China the concept of Couture, as it is understood in the worlds fashion capitals. Though we decided to establish ourself in Beijing, we've choose to go opposite direction from what fashion usually means here. We've created a very small entity, a fashion atelier, working on studio scale.

The concept is simple, the creation, the fabrication, and the distribution, are all merged in one space, the atelier. We, the créateurs, are living a tight relationship with this space, we take it as an extension of our hand, and our mind. It in this space that we elaborate our concepts, that we conceive our collections, that we produce them, and display them. Everything is done in house. No complicated relations with suppliers, manufacturers,... This extraordinary tool that the atelier is, allows us to pay a huge attention to the elaboration of our garments, to perfect their technical aspects, to make them in the most appropriated way.

Le Divan is not just a brand, it is a "Maison de Couture", it takes more from the artist studio than from the design agency. With such concept, whatever if the atelier is located in Paris, Milan, Beijing or Mumbay, what matters at then end, is only the quality of what gets out of the studio, the quality of the design, of the creation, and of the fabrication. Being a "Maison de Couture", more than an image, a high price-range or a prestigious address, it is an attitude toward creation.

Beijing offers plenty of very various work spaces. But when comes the time to pick one to use, it is always such a pain to find the perfect one. Too small, too big, not enough light, bad location, too much renovations, unfriendly landlord, too expensive, unfit to settle a business, promised to be destroyed… The process of locating for sure is not an easy quest.

Though, on that subject, we’ve always been very lucky. In conversations, we are often asked how we always manage to find, and get places that fits our needs so well, and offers such a nice atmosphere. I think we just been very lucky, and with a little bit of determination and intuition, one can find a little pearl and turn it into the loveliest place.

The First Studio

We’ve spent our first 2 years at Baihua Shenchu (one of the hutongs surrounding Houhai Lake area), in a very enjoyable studio. The Baihua Shenchu (a place hidden under hundreds of flowers in Chinese) studio is the place that witnesses the birth of Le Divan, and were we have establish the foundations of our work. Some of you know that it has also been the theater of many parties and get together.

The First Studio, at Baihua Shenchu

The Caochangdi Studio

If one wants to grow and evolve, one have to leave it’s cradle. And has Baihua Shenchu was getting too small, we started looking for somewhere else. Being central was not a need anymore for us and it seemed relevant to move to a place where we would be surrounded by creative activities. Caochangdi then appeared to be the perfect spot. This little district of Beijing’s outskirts has already been chosen by many artists and designers as their working and living place. Totally by chance, and in a stroke of luck, we found an extraordinary compound, the Iowa Plantation, a complex of dome-like greenhouses, which host artist studios, a restaurant, a plantation, an now, our headquarter.

It took a few months to adapt this place to our special needs, and it now offers us the best environment for our activity. We long ago took the choice to live and work in the same place, and the building we found in Caochangdi offers the perfect balance for that.

Half of the building is a big loft-style room, under a tall dome, full of light. Which is a perfect design room, and show-room. It also promise to be a great place for parties and show-case.

The main room at the Caochangdi Studio - Photo by Anne Li - www.anneliphotography.com

The other half consist in a series of rooms of different sizes, in which we’ve installed the cutting room, machine room, archives, fabric collection, and living areas.

What is offered by this space is not just a great working studio, it actually is a full lifestyle. A lifestyle we designed for ourself. A lifestyle that is a full dedication to our creative activity, a fusion between our personal life and our work.

Everybody needs every now and then, to take a trip in the depth of it’s own mind. Taking a look at unsolved issues, cleaning up the mess, finding inspiration in one’s own experience, and finding one’s right place and relation with oneself, and the world. In short, having a face to face and cards on the table conversation with oneself. It is an essential process, but it is not a natural, or an easy one. It can be done through many ways. A series of visit to the divan of a psychologist is one of them.

For creative minds, putting words on feelings and emotions is not always the best way to earn consciousness about them, nor to express them.

As many creative peoples did before us, we realized that the practice of a totally liberated creative practice, was worth the best possible psychotherapy. The introspection, and the creative works, forms a beneficial ring. Creating liberates the mind, and is an invitation to more thinking. More thinking, in a liberated mind, creates opportunity for creation, provides inspiration and brings us to discover more potential in the depth of our minds.

More than just the name of our fashion house, “Le Divan” describes the process of our creation. We mentally lay down on that, and plunge the depth of our emotions and ideas, in order to extract and express our artistic vision.

Moving from a tranquil village to the coastal city of Marseille, for a seven year old it was an entirely new universe to discover.

From an early age he was drawn to the numerous construction sites of the growing city. It would seem that the process of construction and architecture, seeing the inner workings, stimulated his imagination. And for a while there were dreams of becoming an architect himself.

Of course, while these dreams were running around in his head Lecour was preoccupied with the task close to many a teenager’s heart — the art of looking good. Second-hand stores became a favorite haunt, picking up pieces and transforming them on his mother’s sewing machine.

Even at that early age Lecour found many similarities between fashion and architecture. The same mission underscored both disciplines: the creation of a shell and identity, for an individual or a society. However, fashion offered him greater opportunity of instant experimentation, with the possibility to be physically in contact with the material at all stages of the process.

So with fashion as his focus, he enrolled at Institut International de Creation et de Couture (IICC) in Marseille.

Even before the commencement of his studies, Lecour began work at a small fashion house where he was exposed to many various aspects of the industry. From the practical tasks of cutting, the nature of fabrics and sewing, to clientele, their appearance and relationship they have with their clothing.

In the final year of his studies Lecour shared his time between school and a local street wear brand. There he not only designed the collections but also gained first-hand knowledge of the world of mass retailing industry as well as the concept of short cycles, and marketing strategies.

On the conclusion of his studies he was hired to create a sports inspired fashion label, where he launched their first collection. As satisfying as it was Lecour wished to expand his horizons and see the world. His adventures began in Europe, pausing in Russia, then Mongolia and finally China.

He was struck by the dynamism, stimulated by the cultural gap, the novelty and the prospect of opportunity that continuously presented itself in this ever-changing society. His decision made, he settled in Beijing. There he also settled into a position as a designer for a Danish brand, leading fashion retail brand within the Chinese market.

Over the following two years Lecour used all the means that industry can provide him, taking the opportunity to create thousands of garments, testing thousands of ideas, fabrics, and shapes. He diversified his skills, learning how to create for leather, fur, denim, knits, and accessories. In that time he was also deeply involved in marketing strategies and market studies; he studied feedback from retailers, spending much of his time on the field. He learned how to understand customers and how to best predict their expectations. This education was extremely beneficial however its price was a shackle on his creative freedom.

It was 2007 when Lecour met Tony Saint Hua. In terms of creativity their collaboration was extremely productive and their experiences complementary. The idea of creating a fashion house between the two quickly emerged. A few months after this meeting, Aurélien resigned from his job and dedicate himself completely to their shared venture Le Divan.

Construction lines and structure obsess Lecour. His passion for architecture underlies his creative work. Very comfortable with pattern making, he uses all the resources of technique to bring his concepts to life. “If the aspect of a pattern does not please my eyes, I know that I will not like the garment that will be created from it. The construction map must be perfect; it must be beautiful in the eye of the technician. All the rest is just a question of style.”

Although he is a technician in a sense, Lecour must not be misunderstood for an austere construction theoretician: “Technique is a strict tool that must serve fantasy and must open creative doors. It is a medium to express singularity.”

According to Lecour garments always reflect a part of one’s personality: “Whether it is, the actual personality or a fantasized personality, the way one dress up always reveals something of themselves. One can accentuate some of his qualities, or even hint at others. One must have a good sense of humour to really have pleasure dressing up.”

His inspirations are very eclectic, whether drawing from the intellectual rigour and architecture of Kahn, from the dramatic scale of the expressionist cinema, in the imagery of Japanese anime or of the rock scene.

They moved to Victoria, Australia when he was 17 years old, however he made his own way to Melbourne, where he graduated from an accounting course at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).

Aware his interests lay in another, much more creative field, Hua began a career as a self-taught graphic designer. All the while he used his spare time to collect second-hand vintage garments and transform them. He indefatigably deconstructed his acquisitions, studied and used their elements to create new items. Over that time he also became acquainted with knowledge of sewing and garment structure, as well as developing his own personal style.

It became apparent very quickly that this was his passion.

In 2001, almost on an impulse, he created his first street wear label: ToeKneeCo. After developing and refining his work he produced his first catwalk show. Exhausted, Hua decided to take a break from his work and journey across Australia to seek inspiration from his adopted home. This adventure concluded in Sydney, where newly energised, he was determined to follow his obsession for creation.
Returning to both Melbourne and RMIT in 2003 Hua enrolled in a textile creation course. There he developed wide technical knowledge of fabrics, fibres and colours. In this period he was also able to develop his own technique of pattern making by combining classic style with his very own instinct for volume.

While studying, Hua created a new fashion project called Midesko, where he presented his work at various fashion competitions and garnered a number of awards. Motivated by these victories, pushed by his ambition and desire to create, and financially aided by friends, he launched Midesko fashion house in 2003. His concept store opened its doors in the district of Fitzroy, home of Australia’s thriving creative alternative culture. “The idea of opening a boutique space came from my need to freely express the Midesko concept and to confront the public with it, more than simply selling garments. This was the key to my creative freedom.”

Early works of Tony Saint Hua, Midesko

The following year his first male and female collection earned Hua a finalist at the Mercedes Australia Fashion Week young designer competition. There he displayed his capacity to assimilate the language of elegance and create a very contemporary silhouette, which married simplicity of lines with the complexity of details.

Driven by a craving to constantly create Hua began to set his sites on other markets and other challenges. In 2006 he closed Midesko and travelled to Europe. The old continent revealed much in terms of culture and experience and provided Hua with a great deal of inspiration. After travelling for six months Hua looked to the new Asian markets and a completely different perspective.

Almost by chance he met Aurélien Lecour, a French fashion designer based in Beijing. From their long discussions and instant creative understanding, the idea of a collaboration emerged. In fact, it almost seemed inevitable. And from that collaboration, Le Divan was born.

Hua draws his inspiration from the street — the people, the architecture, the spirit that drives some individuals to cast off the conventional. His creations are characterised by sharp, asymmetric lines, by a structured “chaos” and especially, by an obsessional attention to detail.

“I expect my creations to be singular, original and to emphasise the individuality of the individual who wears it.” His inspirations are minimalist theoreticians, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto, as well as crazy iconoclasts such as John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.

According to Hua, the individual merges with what he wears. But it must be the person who carries the garment and never the outfit carrying the person. “If you do not know how to wear a garment, do not buy it, if it does not match you, I will not allow you to buy it. An unmatched outfit is good neither for the garment (and thus for the creator), nor for the customer.”

It is always with passion and devotion that he speaks of his work and it is that passion that keeps him striving, experimenting and creating.

We are driven by a definitely focused opinion concerning out role as designers. We believe that one’s attire is at the same time a reflection of, and influence to, the wearer’s personality. It is a very expressive medium to communicate with the society about it’s mood and identity, and either it is a honest extroversion, or a disguise, it is the first sign you read when you encounter an individual. The attire also has a significant impact on one’s mood and feeling. Consciously or not, we feel different according to what we are wearing.

The ambition of our garments is to inspire a state of mind, based on positivity and confidence, which would allow the wearer to be who he wishes to be, and express the full potential of his personality.

Our aim to help individuals to earn confidence in humility, positioning themselves in harmony with their wishes, moods and environment, is to be related to the aim of psychology.

As the psychologist’s divan, our creations are meant to be a mean, between others, in the quest for that state of mind.

Through the blog, we wish to establish a connection between ourselves and our audience, in the same way as a communication is established between a psychologist and his patient. Our label has been named after “the couch” [Le Divan] used by the psychologists, because the practice of our creative activity works for us as a psychotherapy work. It then makes perfect sense for us to lay down our concepts, feelings and thought on a blog, and receive a feedback, an analysis about it from our audience. Unlike a monologue we expect our articles to inspire reactions and comments, as an interpretation of our dreams and our visions.”
